Giving children the foundations they need to succeed

In many underserved communities of Kolkata, children face significant barriers to learning. Overcrowded classrooms, limited support at home, and high dropout rates make it difficult for many young learners to reach their full potential. Most of the children we support are first-generation learners, meaning they are the first in their families to attend school.

The Mukti Kishalaya Support Schools (MKSS) project helps bridge this gap by providing quality learning support to 80 children aged 6 to 10 years through community-based learning centres in Maniktala, Kolkata.

Our approach is simple: every child deserves individual attention and a safe environment in which to learn. Small class sizes allow teachers to focus on each child’s needs, helping them strengthen their reading, writing and numeracy skills while building confidence and motivation.

A unique aspect of the programme is that it also empowers women. Educated women from the local community are recruited, trained and employed as teachers, creating meaningful livelihood opportunities while strengthening community ownership of children’s education.

Our goal

We want every child to develop the skills, confidence and support needed to stay in school, continue learning and build a brighter future. Our teachers gain a stable income and become community role models. By combining quality education with women’s empowerment, MKSS creates lasting benefits for children, families and the wider community.
