Creating safer future for adolescents
Adolescence is a critical period in a young person’s life. In West Bengal, many girls and boys face risks such as violence, abuse, exploitation, harmful gender norms and early marriage. Too often, they lack the information, confidence and support needed to protect themselves and seek help when required.
Suraksha Songlap is a school-based project that helps adolescents build the knowledge, confidence and life skills needed to stay safe and thrive. Working with 350 girls and boys aged 13 to 17 in three government high schools in Jhargram District, West Bengal, the programme promotes safety, gender equality and mutual respect.
Through interactive activities such as sports, arts and storytelling, adolescents learn about their rights, personal safety, healthy relationships and available support systems. Rather than treating girls and boys separately, the programme brings them together to encourage dialogue, understanding and shared responsibility.
Parents, teachers and community members are also involved, helping to create a supportive environment around young people both inside and outside school.

Our goal
We want every adolescent to feel safe, informed and empowered. By strengthening awareness, confidence and support networks, Suraksha Songlap helps young people become active participants in shaping safer and more inclusive communities. With our support, adolescents are better equipped to recognize risks and seek support.
